Geboren in Kalifornien, fängt Nick Waterhouse mit zwölf Jahren an, Gitarre zu spielen. Zwei Jahre später gründete er eine Band und spielt noch heute die Songs, die er damals schrieb. Der heute 31-Jährige (Happy Birthday nochmal!) fängt bald an, in einem Plattenladen zu arbeiten, der sein Leben verändern soll. Hier liegt der Schlüssel zu all seinen Freunden, Bekannten und Vorbildern aus der Musikszene. Hier verbringt er seine Zeit und sucht seine Backgroundsängerinnen.

And this sort of forced you to give up that aspect of life. I rowed to far to the sea and now I’m going to be on the sea for the rest of my life.
Während andere ihn als Retroverschnitt nicht ernst nehmen, gefällt ihm unsere Interpretation von einer präsenten Parallelwelt besser. Er hat sich die Version der Realität zusammengesucht, die ihm interessanter erscheint, als der Mainstream.
I think Ralph Ellison said the language of the poet or artist is supposed to be his dreams. And so you are supposed to be so motivated by the world around you and disgusted by it or frustrated by it that you create your own and that’s what making something is.
Für seine Musik hat er sein ganz normales Leben aufgegeben. Er vermisst es, einfach durch die Straßen zu schlendern, Kaffee zu trinken und Buchläden zu durchforsten. Aber eigentlich möchte er von dem Punkt, wo er jetzt ist, auch nicht mehr weg.

Nick Waterhouse ist inspirierend. Nicht nur als Musiker, sondern als vollständiger Mensch. Die Art und Weise, seine Überlegungen mit denen von inspirierenden Persönlichkeiten zu vergleichen, zeigt nur, dass Nick sich an Größen orientiert, die zwar heutzutage zwar kaum einen Namen mehr haben, aber zumindest in ihm weiterleben. Und vielleicht ist er gar nicht der einzige ‚alte‘ Mann auf dem Meer, wenn ihn so viele Menschen für seinen Zeitgeist bewundern.
